How to Make Wooden Dining Tables

How to Make Wooden Dining Tables

Learning how to build wooden dining tables can save you a lot of money because buying new can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. You can choose to use plywood or a nicer type of wood like pine for each dining tabletop, depending on your budget. There are also several options you may want to consider for the table legs, including cable reels and spindle-type legs. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Cut a plywood sheet to 4 feet by 8 feet by 3/4 inch, if you weren't able to get a pine board cut to size at the lumberyard.

    2

Round out the edges with your saw. Sand the edges until they are smooth and equal in size and appearance.

    3

Use the sander on the rest of the wood as well as the cable reels or spindles in any spots that appear to be rough. Wipe off the dust shavings with a wet towel.

    4

Set the two cable reels on their sides, and put the plywood or pine board on top. Make sure the cable reels are spaced about a foot apart and are centered according to the length and width of the pine or plywood top. If you're using wood spindles, space the four spindles evenly at each of the four edges of the piece of wood.

    5

Secure the pine board to each of the two cable reels by using the screw gun to drill four 2.5-inch screws through the pine and into each of the cable reels. Set the level on the tabletop to check that the table is even and level. If you're using wood spindles, attach each of the four spindles to the underside of the table in the same manner.

    6

Use the sander to smooth out any other areas that feel rough to the touch, especially along the edges.

    7

Paint all the wood with a thorough coat of stain. Let the stain dry for 12 hours and apply a second coat. Let the table dry for another 12 hours before you use it.
