How to Refelt a Pool Table

Whether it be from normal use or some particular damage, it may be desirable to replace the felt on a pool table. It is not as difficult as one might assume to get professional-looking results from a do-it-yourself project.

Instructions

Refelting a Pool Table

    1

The first step is to measure the table. When you have the measurements, add a foot to each side. This will allow for enough material to sufficiently install the new felt.

    2

Remove the rails from the sides of the pool table. This may be accomplished by unscrewing the rails from underneath the table. The rails will need to also be covered in the same material as the pool table's top. Therefore, you should purchase enough additional material to cover the rails.

    3

Beneath the rails you will find staples that hold the felt in place. Carefully remove all of the staples, taking care to not damage the surrounding pool table surface. Be sure to completely remove all of the staples. Remove the old felt.

    4

Spread the new felt over the table top. This is a great time to do a thorough inspection for picks, flaws or any other defects that would detract from the table. Also ensure there is about a foot of extra material all the way around the table.

    5

To begin attaching the new felt to the table, stand at one side of the table. Beginning in the center, attach the new felt with a staple gun to the table. As you work, smooth and straighten the material, taking care to not pull too much to one side.

    6

As you approach the corners, you will need to make three cuts. Using a technique that involves wrapping the felt under the edges, continue to pull the material snug and staple into place.

    7

Once the entire table is smoothed and attached on all four sides, reattach the rails. The rails will have been covered in the same new material as the tabletop itself and will be secured with staples. It will be necessary to push a small hole through the new felt from below in order the reattach the rails. Once again, ensure the rails are installed in the correct location.
