Common Pool Table Cushion Problems

Common Pool Table Cushion Problems

Pool cushions play an important role in the game of pool. The cushions are used inside and outside of the pool area to protect the surface of the table and to provide something for the balls to bounce off of. Most cushions are made of rubber, but leather and cloth is also sometimes used. If there is a problem with the cushions then there will be a problem with the entire game.

Tearing

Pool cushions can tear through a variety of factors. The most common factors are age and use. When cushions tear, the game plays differently. If you address the tear right away then you can use a tear repair product on it depending on the material of the cushion. The easiest kind of material to repair is leather. Vinyl can also be repaired, but it does not repair as well. Liquid leather or other cushion repair can repair tears back to their original state. Torn rubber cushions can be repaired with a strong glue.

Cracking

Cracking can be a problem with pool cushions. If sunlight hits the pool table for extended periods of time, it will almost inevitably crack. The dryness of the air and the UV rays from the sun will break down the cushions. If you regularly apply a moisturizing material to the surface of the cushions this will resist the effects of sunlight and heat. Ideally you should keep the pool table in a dark, cool room. If you do not allow direct sunlight to fall on the cushions, cracking is much less of a problem.

Pulling

Over time the cushions will likely pull away from the surface of the table. This is due to time and can be accelerated by wear and tear, such as someone sitting on the rails of the pool table. Never allow anyone to sit on the cushions or rails as this will cause severe pulling that may not be repairable. If this happens then the entire cushion or railing system will have to be replaced, which is very expensive. About once every six months check for signs of pulling. You will be able to tell if the cushions are pulling because there will be a crack between rail and cushion, or the cushion may wiggle. You can either glue or staple the cushions back in place.
