How to Balance a Billiard Table

Pool is a game of accuracy and precision. Any variance in the table's levelness can dampen the enjoyment of the game. Even a slight lean can force shots astray and turn a skilled player into an apparent novice. This is why a table should be leveled routinely for optimum enjoyment and accuracy during play.

Instructions

Identifying tilt or lean

    1

Place the carpenter's level directly on the felt in the middle of the table centered along the length of the table. Note whether the bubble is centered in the cylinder, and if not, which side it moves toward.

    2

Turn the level 90 degrees so that it is centered along the width of the table and again note the position of the bubble.

    3

Place the level on the felt several inches from each of the four side rails, noting the bubble placement at each position.

    4

Compare the bubble placement from each of the three length readings. If the bubble is centered in each reading the length is level. If the Bubble moves to the same direction in all three readings then your table tilts to one side. Both legs on the side which the bubble moves to should be lowered. If your bubble readings are inconsistent, then most likely only one leg needs adjusted or diagonal legs should be lowered.

    5

Repeat the leveling steps for the width readings to determine exactly which legs, if any, need lowered.

Adjusting your table

    6

Many tables have adjusters of one kind or another to make leveling easier. These are often screws or nuts found on the feet or at the base of each leg. Consult your owner's manual on how to use the adjusters or leveling mechanism on your particular table.

    7

With a wrench or a pair of pliers, lower the leveling mechanism on the leg or legs that your analysis indicated were too high. Do this slowly since the variance is most often only a few millimeters. As you progress, check your work frequently with your level. If your table does not have a leveling mechanism, then use small wooden shims to raise the legs that were lower than the others.

    8

Keep checking the leveling readings to verify the table is completely level. It may also be wise to slowly roll the cue ball across the length and width of the table in several spots to confirm the level's readings. The cue ball should be able to slowly roll the entire length and width of the table in a completely straight line on a level table.
