How to Decorate a Table for a Dinner

So you're having a formal dinner party, or perhaps just a few close friends over for supper. Or maybe it's just your family, but you want to make dinner time a special occasion. Whatever the reason, this article will give you some ways to dress up and decorate your table for dinner-whether that dinner is formal, casual, or somewhere in-between! Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

How to Decorate a Table for Dinner

    1

Choose colors and patterns that compliment each other. If you have dishes that are patterned, you will want to use a plain tablecloth and napkins. If your dishes are brightly colored, you will want to choose a more subdued color for your tablecloth, and visa-versa.

    2

Upgrade! Pull out the good china and crystal. Use those water goblets you got for your wedding that are gathering dust in your cabinets. Teach your children how to use linen napkins instead of paper ones. Many people make the mistake of saving the "good stuff" for formal occasions that only happen once or twice a year. Make dinner time a special occasion every night, and show your family how special they are to you!

    3

Create placecards. Although usually used only on formal occasions, placecards can be a fun way to add style and personality to the table. At an informal gathering, try using nicknames on the placecards instead of given names, and see who can guess where each person is supposed to sit.

    4

Create a centerpiece. Centerpieces are a great way to dress up your table, and can be formal or informal depending on the occasion. Choose some flowers from your garden and place them in a colorful pitcher for a fun, casual, summertime look. Use candles of varying heights for a more formal, romantic feel. If you have children, let them help you create special holiday centerpieces using materials found at any inexpensive craft store.

    5

Make sure everyone is comfortable. Grab that leaf you have sitting in your garage and add it to your table to create more space. Add soft, colorful cushions to your chairs if they are hard. Making your family and guests comfortable will allow them to enjoy and linger over their meal, encouraging conversation and proper eating habits.
