How to Set up and Level a Pool Table

Playing pool is a relaxing and fun recreational pursuit, especially on a level pool table. Setting up and leveling a pool table requires more than following the assembly instructions from the manufacturer. The skill of the installer in leveling the table plays an important part in the process. The weight of a slate bed pool table makes this project a challenge for do-it-yourselfers and may require the assistance of a friend or neighbor. Does this Spark an idea?

Assemble the frame and legs of the pool table according to manufacturer's instructions. Set the table in place at this time before the slate is added and the weight of the table increases.

Place the slate on the table frame. Due to its weight, the slate is commonly shipped in multiple pieces. Even the smaller pieces require assistance with lifting and carrying the slate. Place the center piece of slate first and measure to confirm its proper placement. Fit the end pieces against the center piece.

Level the slate by placing wood wedges between the slate and the frame. Place a 4-foot carpenter's level on the slate. Use the wedges to raise portions of the slate to perfect level with the other portions of the slate. Move the level up and down the table. Check the level in both directions of the table.

Fasten the slate to the frame using slate screws. Use screws furnished with the table and place in the predrilled holes in the slate.

Fill any cavities above the slate screws and the seams between the segments of slate with filler. Some tables will include proprietary filler while others use auto body putty. Use a putty knife to fill the openings level with the slate. Sand away any excess filler to a smooth finish.

Cover the slate of the table with felt. Stretch the slate into place according to manufacturer's instructions and staple to the slate's wood backing.

Attach the rails, pockets and any trim pieces to the pool table. Cover the rails with felt, if required, before installation. Adding the pockets and trim to the table are often the last steps required to set up and level a pool table.
