Distance Between Pool Tables & Lights

Distance Between Pool Tables & Lights

An effective pool table light fixture illuminates the entire surface of the pool table, including the tops of the rails. The position of the light should be high enough to allow players to shoot and maneuver under the light, but not so high as to shine into the eyes of the players or interfere with play. Pool table lights must only illuminate the pool table and not the whole room.

Positioning

Position the light fixture lengthwise along the pool table. Use the middle white diamond at the end of the pool table as a reference point, and center the light above the table. For normal usages, the bottom of the lampshade should measure around 36 to 42 inches above the playing surface, or approximately 62 to 70 inches from the floor. Lower the light as much as necessary, within those parameters, so that the edge of the light illuminates to the edge of the table.

Official Regulations

The official rules of The World Pool Billiard Association require that the lighting fixture illuminate a minimum of 48 foot-candles of light on the bed and rails. If necessary, a reflector structure or screen should be used ensure that the center of the table does not receive more light than the corners or rails. The association specifies for tournaments that movable light fixtures must be at least 40 inches higher than the pool table bed, while non-movable light fixtures must be at least 65 inches above the pool table bed.
