How to Make Serving Trays for a Wedding

How to Make Serving Trays for a Wedding

Specially decorated serving trays are an accessory for any wedding. If you don't own any serving trays that are appropriate, make your own with a few supplies and by following some simple steps. All you need is an old dresser drawer or kitchen drawer. Once your serving tray is constructed, you can decorate it in a variety of ways to match your wedding decor.

Instructions

    1

Sand the entire surface of the drawer, inside and out, with a piece of sandpaper. Turn the drawer upside down. Using household cement or superglue, attach ball knobs to the bottom of the drawer. Place one at each corner. Let the glue dry for a few hours before you turn the drawer over. Use a dry cloth to wipe away any reside left from sanding before you begin to paint.

    2

Paint all surfaces of your serving tray drawer with acrylic paint in the color of your choice. Also paint the feet of your tray using white acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry for a few hours and apply another coat if necessary for total coverage.

    3

Choose a stencil in an appropriate design for a wedding tray, such as flowers, wedding bells, doves or hearts. Place the stencil in the center of the drawer. Attach it to the inside of your drawer with tape. Attach other stencils with tape on the outside of your drawer. Using acrylic paint and a small paintbrush, color the inside of the stencils to form the design for your tray. Allow the paint to completely dry before you remove the stencil. This should take a few hours.

    4

Paint all surfaces of your serving tray drawer, inside and out, with clear acrylic finish. This will help to seal the paint color and protect your stenciled designs from chipping. Place a cabinet handle on each side of the drawer to serve as handles for your tray. The cabinet handles will come in a package which includes two small screws. Use an electric screwdriver to attach the handles to the drawer.

    5

Decorate your wedding serving tray with items that coordinate with your wedding theme. Glue sprays of flowers to the outside of the tray that match your bouquet or add beads, sequins or ribbons. Use household cement or superglue to add pictures of you and your fiance to the outside of the tray. Glue small wedding embellishments, such as tiny bells, doves or roses, onto the tray. You can find most of these items at craft stores or wedding supply stores.
