How to Use a Pool Table Felt Repair Kit

How to Use a Pool Table Felt Repair Kit

A good pool table can cost you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars and it can all be ruined by a slip of the cue that tears the felt on the table. The felt on a pool table is the most-damaged part of the table. You can pay for replacement felt, but that means you'll pay for a large piece of material when you can repair the tear more inexpensively using a felt repair kit.

Instructions

    1

Thread the curved needle with the thread included in your repair kit. Don't tie a knot in the thread at this point.

    2

Begin your repair about an inch away from the tear. Insert the needle under the felt and come up at the joint in the tear. Leave about an inch of thread sticking out from where you first inserted the needle. Most felt tears will be in an L-shape. Begin your repairs where the two legs of the L come together.

    3

Place your stitches a uniform distance from each other and insert the needle about 1/8 inch away from the tear on either side. After each stitch, make sure you maintain tension when you pull the needle through. You want the edges of the torn felt to touch snugly but not to bunch up.

    4

Work away from the intersection of the tear going down one leg and then the other.

    5

Insert the needle under the felt when the tear is closed and bring it out about an inch from the tear. Insert it again as close as you can to where you just pulled the needle out and bring all of the thread out about an inch away.

    6

Cut the end of the thread off next to the felt, being careful not to damage the felt.

    7

Flatten the threads by tapping it gently with a hammer or pressing the hammer head down onto the threads.

    8

Roll a pool ball over the tear to make sure that the threads are flat enough so they don't interfere or alter the ball's path. If the ball's course is affected, use the hammer again to flatten the threads more.
